How to prevent random encounters in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands Guides

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands blends a lot of classic RPG mechanics and ideas to the zany character of the Borderlands franchise, and it works really well. Tons of TTRPG and RPG fans are enjoying the heck out of the game right now. But since it has a lot of traditional game mechanics, there’s some confusion and frustration bound to happen. Players adventure around the various zones, shooting anything that moves. Mostly while Tina yells at you in her characteristic snarky way. As you fight through various bosses, earning mountains of loot, you will increase in power. Along with that comes a need to manage and upgrade your inventory.

Beyond the fun of figuring out loot, there are some downers too. Like any other RPG, random encounters in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands are a thing. While roaming the overworld in Wonderlands, enemies can and will appear in the tall grass, very much like the iconic Pokémon games. And you won’t always be able to path around these areas. Sometimes, you have to venture into said tall grass.  These common combat encounters can be pretty taxing on player fun. A lot of RPGs offer ways to avoid them, as they are often tedious and unchallenging. Does this game have such a method?

The comparison to the Pokémon games is very accurate here. You wander around the overworld looking for loot, dungeons and more. During that time, you’re bound to have a random encounter spawn ahead of you.

But much like Pokémon Sword and Shield, you have a method for avoiding them. You can simply run away from them for a short distance, forcing them to return to their spawn. By abusing the pathfinding logic of the AI, you can effectively dodge most overworld encounters. It’s not the optimal solution, but it works. And while it will slow progress down a bit, most players find the small time savings to be worth the extra bit of backtracking.

You do have one other option. If you get close to an enemy, press the melee button on your controller or keyboard to hit the enemy. This will send them flying back and allow you to get past them. Combine this with running away to get past the vast majority of encounters in the game.

There are plenty of other things to learn about this game. This game uses emotes to both show-off, and to facilitate communication between players. And with the photo mode in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, they have a bit more utility there as well. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is available now on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC.
