Final Fantasy XVI gets a new trailer, coming Summer 2023

FINAL FANTASY XVI releases 2023

Final Fantasy XVI is coming, quite soon in fact. Following yesterday’s Sony State of Play livestream, which showed off new Final Fantasy XVI footage and gave a release window, Square Enix has fueled up the marketing machine. This game is going to be a huge investment for the company, so they’re putting a lot of effort into promoting it. There’s a new trailer out today, giving fans something to chew on over the weekend.

We got a few details about how the new setting is being plunged into chaos by malicious forces, and how there’s a new hero trying to stop it. The company also teased some new stuff with characters and gameplay mechanics. The Dominants are the primary magic users in the setting, and their existence has caused a lot of issues. And that’s where the main character comes in. They appear to be working with a Dominant capable of summoning a powerful entity known as the Warden of Wind Eikon, Benedikta. Very common JRPG flair here it sounds like.

We already knew about Clive Rosfield, who is Final Fantasy XVI’s protagonist. However, today’s blog post provides brief character profiles for Hugo Kupka and Benedikta Harman.

Here’s the game’s story, as per the blurb. “The story follows Clive Rosfield, a young man dedicated to mastering the blade, who is dubbed the First Shield of Rosaria and tasked to guard his younger brother Joshua—the Dominant of the Phoenix. Unexpected events set Clive on a dark and dangerous road to revenge.”

Along with the new trailer comes a bunch of new characters and story details. And as is usual for these kinds of announcements, details are still a bit vague. Game producer Naoki Yoshida did offer some light at the end of the tunnel. According to him, the game is close to being polished up and going gold. During the blog post released with the new trailer, Yoshi P did say the following:

“I’m happy to announce that the game is fully playable from start to finish; though, from optimization to brush-up, there is still a mountain of challenges to tackle as we head into our final push. Until then, please stay tuned.”

Final Fantasy XVI will release exclusively for the PlayStation 5 in the Summer of 2023.
