Corsair has further diversified with news this week that the PC parts maker will acquire Scuf Gaming in a new deal. Scuf is most notable for their creation of custom gaming controllers for pro gamers and other applications. Corsair will acquire the full company for an undisclosed sum. The buyout is expected to be complete by the end of January 2020, when Scuf will fully be integrated with Corsair on a product level.
Scuf will remain a separate brand and continue to operate out of its headquarters in Atlanta, and its regional offices will remain in place as well. This is the same approach Corsair has taken with Elgato, a maker of streaming and broadcasting products, which it bought last year. The Scuf brand will continue to build its legacy from the last decade, now with support from Corsair.
“Over the last ten years, we’ve worked tirelessly to create the features that have made Scuf the preferred controller for the majority of top professional gamers. Controllers are the single most important connection between an individual and their game, becoming an extension of the player to maximize their performance,” said Duncan Ironmonger, founder and CEO of Scuf Gaming.
George Makris, Corsair’s marketing director, told PCWorld that the company will be able to compete in a new market with this acquisition. The process of developing these products for Corsair could take years, so it makes much more sense to just buy smaller companies. This is the strategy that the company has used for some time. Corsair bought Elgato and Origin PC for the same reason.
Other members of the executive team weighed in as well. “We are thrilled to greatly expand our portfolio of industry-leading peripherals and enter the gaming controller space to help gamers play at their best,” said Andy Paul, founder and CEO of Corsair. “Scuf leads the market for performance controllers and are a key ingredient to the success of countless esports professionals.”
Scuf Gaming holds a variety of patents for gaming controllers and other peripherals. In total, they hold 103 verified patents, with another 55 pending approval. The company specializes in a variety of custom controller solutions, as well as partnerships with pro gamers and related brands. It’s very likely that Corsair will make use of some of these to expand its growing line of premium PC accessories.
Elgato built its branding as a streaming tools company, making and marketing products aimed at content creators, with solutions for streaming,video capture and other niches.
Origin PC is a small-scale PC builder that specializes in creating high-end gaming and workstation PCs. Founded by former employees of Alienware in 2009, it has built partnerships with various gaming brands by supplying high-end builds for various competitions and collaborations.
