Control spin-offs are in the early stages of development

Control Cinematic Story Trailer

Remedy Entertainment is working on various games, primary sequels to some beloved franchises. Remedy is working on a number of projects, including the previously discussed “Condor” as well as a few other items. There are actually two different projects in the Control franchise in the works. Details have been revealed of the projects buried within the latest financial report for the studio.

Control spin-offs are a pretty unique thing, given just how niche the game’s story and setting were. But it does make some sense, given how visually impressive the game is. Giving details, Remedy detailed a bit about the projects. “Codename Condor, a spin-off game of Control, continues in the proof-of-concept stage. Codename Heron, a bigger Control game, is in the concept stage and its prototyping continues.” The former of these is a multiplayer title, a very unique departure. The company fully admits that the multiplayer shift seems a bit weird. In previous reporting on these games, the studio was pretty vague.

“Control is first and foremost a world, a place for multitudes of stories, events, and characters, said Remedy’s Mikael Kasurinen, game director. The game uses a strange and chaotic setting with so much more than meets the eye. So seeing that a multiplayer spin-off was in the works is strange to some.

“We get that there is going to be skepticism about multiplayer. But I believe we can create shared experiences without compromising the unique DNA of who we are, or the stories we want to tell. Yes, we need to re-think our angles, our techniques, our mindset, but we see it as an exciting challenge.”

In its financial results report, Remedy discussed several projects, and indicated which stages they were at in development. “Alan Wake 2 is in the full production stage. A lot of work remains, but the game is starting to take a more complete form in many areas. As communicated earlier, Alan Wake 2 will be released in 2023.”

Back in 2021, gamers and fans of the original already got good news. The news broke about a year ago that the team at Remedy were in the process of making sequels for the franchise. Back when this was announced, it was given the name Condor, and we finally have an update.

Remedy said that while it has almost solely focused on single-player experiences, the developers are also fans of multiplayer games and that playing with others can make games “shine as brightly as any single-player experience.” And with the bigger budget attached to the Heron project, that may become the case. “It is going to be a long time before we show off these projects,” said the team back in 2021, and that seemingly remains the case. We have yet to see any more substantial details about these games.
