During the recent The Kinda Funny Games Showcase, there was a ton of new gameplay, announcements and trailers for various new and upcoming games. One of these new announcements came in the form of a new trailer for The Church In The Darkness. This game is the upcoming action-adventure title from Paranoid Productions.
The Church In The Darkness is set in 1970’s South America, and tasks the player with tracking down a reclusive cult of psychopaths led by the mysterious Isaac and Rebecca Walker. These two lead the Collective Justice Mission, an organization fleeing political persecution in America. The message of an equal and just society is appealing, and attracts many followers to their new home in the jungles of South America. That new home is the newly built settlement of Freedom Town. And it’s that message that draws the player in, but not for the reasons you think.
The player takes control of Vic, a man going to Freedom Town to check on his nephew Alex. The gameplay comprises an updated take on the top-down action titles of the years long gone. The player can choose different ways to approach each problem, and it should be fun to see how those choices impact the story, one that apparently changes as you play. Every playthrough offers unique gameplay scenarios and story elements, with different character personalities and a shifting narrative told through investigation and action.
It will be interesting to see how the developers weave the narrative together, and how they’ll handle the political subtext of the story. It could go down the unfortunately conservative path of any cop drama TV show and end up being essentially “history as told by cops”, with all of the associated condescending attitude and embracing of the status quo that these stories tend to fall into. Although I hope not.

It was originally announced in 2016 to ship in early 2017, but is now expected to be released in 2019 for Microsoft Windows, MacOS, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It was designed by Richard Rouse III under the name Paranoid Productions.
