Staff openings at Blizzard point to new projects and big updates

Blizzard

A few eagle-eyed gamers spotted some interesting developments over at Blizzard. There’s now a rampant tide of speculation going on across the internet due to a pair of new job listings for the developer of games such as World of Warcraft and Starcraft.

One new job listing for a position at Blizzard Entertainment suggests the classic real-time strategy game Warcraft III is getting even more content updates. The listing is looking for a senior software engineer will be dealing with designing, implementing, and maintaining various systems in Warcraft III. There’s also some expectations for the applicant to have experience in AI, combat, pathing, multiplayer, and/or related game systems.

The fact that Warcraft III is still getting content updates or patches shouldn’t be that much of a surprise, as the developer launched an invite-only WC3 event a few months ago. As to what exactly Blizzard has planned, we can’t say beyond that WC3 still has some life left in it. Fans are speculating about everything from a full Warcraft III remaster, to a new content expansion.

Another new position is for a Senior/Principal Game Designer and it is specifically looking for someone with “experience in developing weapons, abilities, and gameplay systems in action or first-person shooter games”. It also appears that the title will be competitive PvP focused as it goes on to say, ” extensive knowledge and passion for competitive first-person shooter games.”

As one would expect, there’s a lot of speculation as to what this new potential shooter might be. It’s unconfirmed if there is a new IP involved or not. Some gamers want it to be some kind of Starcraft tie-in, others want another competitive shooter similar to Overwatch. Given that at least one of the projects has a PvP focus, it’s even possible that Blizzard is taking a stab at the Battle Royale genre.

Whatever it is, hopefully, it won’t get canned before it sees the light of day like Titan. Whatever these projects turn out to be, we’ll have a lot of questions until then.

And with BlizzCon 2018 on the way, we may well get our answers.
