How to Disable Zombies Respawning in Project Zomboid

Project Zomboid

Zombies are something akin to cannon fodder in most horror franchises. These rotting and shambling terrors are a lot more threatening when they’re the primary antagonist, especially in zombie-focused games. Hordes of the rotting undead are pretty menacing. If you find yourself having trouble, try messing with some game settings.

The settings for the game can be altered pretty aggressively. Players can change things like zombie speed, as well as loot in the game world. Some folks might also want to remove the option for zeds to respawn. This is helpful as the undead can sometimes spawn inside your base. Zombie respawns in Project Zomboid can be disabled very easily, here’s how.

How to Disable Zombie Respawns in Project Zomboid

The process is very simple, and it’s just like changing any other game setting. You need to make these changes when first starting your game, as they are set at world gen. So if you want to disable zombie respawns in Project Zomboid, you need to do it there.

  • Start a new game from the main menu by selecting Solo
  • Select the Custom Sandbox option and choose any spawn point
  • Select the Advanced Zombie Options tab
  • Change the Respawn Hours setting to 0
  • Tweak any other settings to your liking and start the game

You could also mess with the other settings too.

Various other zombie settings can be changed. You can improve or reduce the sight, hearing and smell of the zombies. The higher these settings are pushed, the more lethal zombies become. Hearing and Sight will affect how quickly zombies notice the player. If you change their smell setting, you will notice that zombies trail you for a lot longer than before.

Another recent patch fixed an exploit of sorts that players have used. A newer setting allows the undead to crawl under vehicles. This stops players using vehicles as temporary fences. You can turn this off if you want.

If you have more questions, there are plenty of other Project Zomboid guides we’ve put together. Since you’re disabling spawns, it’s a good idea to dispose of all those corpses.
