MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is almost upon us. Developer Piranha Games has shared a few new details about the project, revealing in more detail exactly what they have planned. The game has gone through a bit of development hell in recent months though. The game got delayed once already. Although given that it’s the first single-player MechWarrior game in almost 20 years, it should be worth the wait. And judging from the newest trailer, we might be right.
There’s plenty to enjoy in this new title. Whether you like stomping around in robots or customizing them, there’s plenty of fun to be had both during and in-between missions. Of all the new additions coming in this new game, along with all of the awesome robots, is the fact that you can demolish the entire battlefield.
Destructible Environments Galore
In addition to the massive roster of giant stompy robots, there’s plenty of other fun to be had. The developer wants fans to be able to live out all of their giant robot dreams. All the big names from the source material are here in terms of mechs. As are many of the weapons. Everything from Urbanmechs to Atlas’ is packed into this combat sim all about kitbashing giant robots with really big guns.
But don’t expect to have to just deal with an enemy lance or two. The opfor will be fully kitted out with tanks, APCs and aircraft support that will allow them to delay and harass your lance into oblivion. You can deal with them fairly easily, just make sure you don’t get to bold. You don’t want to be caught in a nightmare struggle reminiscent of the Clans on Tukayyid. Blasting through this landscape will of course leave refused behind, and change the battlefield. Tactical maneuvering is a huge chunk of tactical decision making in MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries.
The addition of fully destructible terrain and structures is very appealing. After all, who doesn’t want to watch an Atlas and and Awesome duke it out amid a crumbling urban landscape that been bathed in fire and littered ruins?
Piranha Games shows off this and more in the new trailer for MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. That can be seen below. MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries launches on December 10 as an Epic Games Store exclusive.
The gameplay is all about managing your own mech lance, something that BattleTech fans will know quite well. Swapping loadouts for weapons and support equipment is a big component in successful mission prep, and it’s a very big element in MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. Grabbing the proper mechs for the job and outfitting them is a huge part of the gameplay loop, and it’s what we see mostly in this new gameplay footage. Taking an Atlas all the way through the process demonstrates a pretty fun little system for creating your ideal death machines.
Another big part of the customization process comes down to look. Players will be able to apply a primary, secondary, and tertiary color to their lance as well. As you slap on new parts, the paint scheme can be altered to completely change the look of the whole machine. Players can go for more personal color schemes, like a blazing pink, or a more lore-accurate Inner Sphere look.
All in all, the game looks rather solid.
