So we’ve got more bad news this week, both for those that wanted a new MechWarrior title and for those that loathe the Epic Games Store. It turns out that a new game based on the legendary robot battling franchise is being delayed. MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, is being pushed back to Dec. 10. And when the game finally does come out, it will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store.
Russ Bullock, the executive producer, announced the change and explained in further detail that this alteration will allow the team to craft an “experience with true freedom of choice and to be able to share that experience in a coop setting.”
This is actually the second time the game has been delayed, as it was originally meant to come out last year. The game showed some promise for both the gameplay and story. Players would manage their “lance” of mechs and the pilots who control them by selecting different gear, all while battling their way across a massive open-world series of missions with immersive weather and topography.
It’s easy to understand why people don’t want Epic around when it comes to games distribution. Some just hate change, and even though Steam is hot garbage, they want to stick to what they know. Others see Epic’s approach of throwing money around as disingenuous and anti-consumer as exclusives are often poorly received in the video game industry. Other gamers just want to hate on Fortnite.
Developer Piranha Games understands though, as they will be offering refunds for anyone that wants them. The developer will be offering full refunds for anyone who pre-purchased the game at any level. This offer can be claimed anytime before . And in a bit of a thank you,any preorder bonuses for MechWarrior Online are free to keep even if you refund the full game, so that’s nice.
And if you’re looking for some robot-battling action to fill that hole in your heart left by this delay, you have some options. Harebrained Schemes’ BATTLETECH just dropped its Urban Warfare DLC a while back, creating an entirely new landscape to battle robots in. The game also has one of the best mods for a tactical RPG with RogueTech,
Developer Piranha Games will be holding two “town halls” on their preorder Discord server to address fan questions and concerns. These are currently dated for 6:00 p.m. PT. The second will take place tomorrow at 10 a.m. PT.
The game does have a release date, at least for now, of December 10th on the PC.
