Knights of the Old Republic is apparently getting a film

Knights of the Old Republic

Various outlets are now reporting on a rumor that there’s a new script in production for a film that gamers and Star Wars fans will be very interested in. According to reports from the annual Star Wars celebration on April 20th, there’s some new irons in the fire, and many people think at least one of them relates to the iconic comic series and RPG franchise,  Knights of the Old Republic.

Speaking to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, various outlets quoted her as saying that Lucasfilm were indeed ‘developing something to look at’ – and though it sounds promising, it’s not a full confirmation. She continued saying she had ‘no idea where things might fall’.

So while this doesn’t confirm a film based on one of the best Star Wars game franchises is coming, it does leave fans hopeful. The story of Revan and Malak is an intriguing one, and a game that set the tone and stakes for what an epic galaxy-spanning RPG should be. And a film based on that idea has some major potential for both action and a deeply engaging character drama.

Some sources are now even claiming that a script is in the works. Allegedly, the script is being penned by Laeta Kalogridis who is best known for her work on Shutter Island and Terminator: Genisys.  And although the latter of those two films is subjectively the worst in the entire franchise, Shutter Island is pretty good. Although a script is only part of the equation, a competent director, and an ad campaign that doesn’t spoil the major twist, are also necessary. Although that latter part is less important for a story that everyone going to see it already knows. I know I just want to see HK call everyone a meatbag. God, I’m such a mark for this film already,

Anyway, these sources are anonymous, so there might not even be a script at all. Lucasfilm could also refuse to back the project. There are genuine concerns about over-saturation of the Star Wars property after the flop of Solo. And with the next rumored trilogy already in the works, and the upcoming release of The Rise of Skywalker, it’s becoming painfully clear that the Marvel approach won’t work for Lucasfilm and Disney. Or if it will, quality over quantity has to be the proper approach.

So while we wait for more news, you could pick up one of the old games and give it a try if you somehow missed it.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is available on Android and iOS devices, PC, the original Xbox, and it is playable on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One via backward compatibility. Although if you’re going to pick it up and play it now, I’d suggest foregoing the PC port unless you’re prepared to do some work with mods and bug fixes to get it running.
