Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Special Ops is the new mode built into the upcoming FPS title from Activision, and it joins the other multiplayer modes as a newer addition to the franchise aimed at offering a new experience. The game is obviously going for a much more violent tone than previous entries, pushing envelope in what gamers are willing to take in strides. The tone will be further reinforced by the much more combative and effective enemy AI you will face in Special Ops. This new mode is built around the Operations segment of gameplay, a series of missions wherein teams of four players are given a set of objectives to complete against increasingly difficult AI opponents.
Activision explained that in this mode, players can “employ different strategies. Players can opt for a much more forward and explosive approach, or go in swiftly and silently. The enemy reacts to your team’s decisions, meaning the outcome of any battle can change.” At the time of the game’s launch, four different Operations will be available. Infinity Ward noted that more will come following the game’s release. And of course there’s other modes like the typical competitive multiplayer and Gunfight modes.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare also offers Missions, which are a little more direct and controlled than the Special Ops stuff. According to the developer, these provide “a more curated experience where your proficiency with specific weapons, killstreaks, and other tools will be tested.” There’s a ton of replay value being offered here, as players are encouraged to retry missions even if they succeed in order to come up with the best overall strategy. And these Missions can be undertaken solo for extra challenge, or you can team up with three buddies if you want.
Another addition is a bit more special, and it’s unfortunately a PS4 exclusive. The newly added Survival mode will be locked to PlayStation 4 owners through October 2020. This new game mode is a new twist on the horde mode, offering a more unique experience compared to the various Zombies modes of previous games in the franchise. The waves adapt to player choice just like in Special Ops, but the map variety and other difficulties add an extra layer.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launches on October 25th for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
