There’s been a lot of buzz around Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the upcoming reboot of the now-legendary shooter franchise. This new entry both returns the FPS titan of a series to its roots, while also innovating and improving upon the formula from top to bottom. The games industry is eagerly awaiting more news about the shooter, and the developer is just as eager to deliver.
There’s even a full reveal of all the maps, modes, and other bits in the multiplayer segment of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare coming on August 1st. But not content to be left out of the news cycle, Activision has just unveiled a new teaser for one mode within the suite of multiplayer features. This new announcement joins other news about the project, like how the final game will have input-based matchmaking for cross-platform play.
The new mode is called Gunfight, and it offers an extremely special take on a simple 2v2 setup. It’s basically a randomly-generated cage fight. The two teams will have fixed loadouts of weapons shared between both teams. The loadouts switch each pair of rounds. Players will duel on extremely confined maps that force the battle into very restricted quarters, and the winning team is the one that wins six rounds first.
It’s a very strange idea, and I really like it, as it puts a tight focus on competitive skill and having powerful communication with your teammate.
Even the history of how this mode came to be is something strange. According to the developers, “When we stripped the game down [to] test each weapon, everyone would check each weapon for balancing, and the game mode was born out of that.”
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is coming to PC, PS4 and Xbox One on October 25th of this year.
