Baldur’s Gate 3 has a lot to do in its various quests and zones. The long-awaited Baldur’s Gate sequel has come out of early access this month, and PC gamers are foaming at the mouth for it. PC gaming has exploded, and gamers are having tons of fun, and for good reason. Folks really seem to like Baldur’s Gate 3. Aside from being one of the most expansive and intricate CRPGs ever made, it’s just a ton of fun to goof around with. There’s also a ton of enemies to fight. And beyond that, there is a literal mountain of side content in the form of quests, encounters and puzzles.
And since there’s a ton of lore in the D&D setting this game is pulling from, of course, the various gods are going to be present. Selune, goddess of the moon is just one member of the pantheon that features prominently in the background lore in BG3. She often shows up in various quests and puzzles. One such puzzle also involving Selune is the Stone Disc puzzle in the Goblin Camp. This guide covers the Gilded Chest of Selûne in the Owlbear Cave and how to get at its treasure.
Baldur’s Gate 3: The Gilded Chest of Selûne in the Owlbear Cave
The Owlbear cave in Baldur’s Gate 3 is west before the Blighted Village and north, if you need a reminder. Head inside, but don’t head all the way to the owlbear encounter just yet. The gilded chest can be accessed before you deal wit the mother and her cub. And you should do this, as there’s a Speak with Animals spell in the treasure horde that makes the owlbear encounter easier. Using that will skip the initial Animal Handling check to appease the angry mother.
The easiest way to get to the chest is to take the path to the first left after entering the Owlbear cave. You just need to crawl down a single cliff face to get to the chest.
How to open the Gilded Chest of Selûne in Bladur’s Gate 3
If you attempt to open it, a spell will blast your character for 4-24 Radiant damage, a ton at the early levels. And since you really don’t want that to happen, here’s how to open the chest.
Word of warning, Shadowheart really doesn’t want you to interact with this magical item, for obvious reasons. To prevent approval loss with her, make sure to remove her from your party before dealing with this puzzle. However, if you want to see the dialogue this triggers, you can leave her in place. Make sure to drop a quicksave if you wish to save scum, as you can fail a check that will lock you out of the chest.
Go over to the chest, then turn to your left. Use your Jump to jump from the rock to the area with the big statue. Walk behind the statue and you should trigger a Perception check. If your main fails it, have another character walk over and hopefully someone spots it.
Now, get close to the chest, open your inventory, right-click on the Selûnite Prayer Sheet, and have the character with the Religion proficiency select “read.” This will magically unlock the Gilded Chest of Selûne, solving the puzzle. The chest has an Idol of Selûne, a silver necklace, and a Bloodstone. These aren’t much, but still a nice thing to get as a secret. There are a few scrolls and potions you can grab on the ground in front of the chest, take what you want from the pile before leaving.
Once you’ve claimed your loot, you can head back into the cave and deal with the owlbear. Make sure to add Shadowheart back to your party if you removed her.
