The C64 Mini, a fully-fledged half-size remake of the C64, is coming

The C64 Mini Announced

Say hello to another addition to the growing line of retro games consoles and other tech being remade in miniature form. This latest additions is none other than the legendary Commodore 64. The C64 Mini is coming to North America this October. The hardware will launch on October 9th specifically.

The C64 Mini will come preloaded with support for modern HDMI and USB, yes you will need a modern USB keyboard to use this, and will come with a whole horde of preloaded games. Here’s a full list of the games that come pre-installed on the C64 Mini:

The unit also features HD output at 720p and 60Hz via HDMI, 4:3 aspect ratio, with support for NTSC and PAL framerates, and a CRT filter for that classic look. The C64 Mini will also include a full version of C64 BASIC, a version of the command scripting language used by the original hardware.

You can also load your own programs, or code them yourself if you’re crazy, via this machine. And this new hardware should support many of the same commands that the original C64 did.

For those of you who want a slightly more user-friendly experience, the manufacturer will be releasing a firmware update post-launch that will add a software loader to make running programs via USB much easier. At first you’ll have to pass commands against the proper directories in order to run any programs. So if you’re looking for that totally nostalgic feel, stick with the original firmware. Although I’d imagine the software loader will be an optional feature.
