Niantic and Warner Bros. have been quietly working on the next game in the Harry Potter franchise. To that end, the partnership turned out a small teaser trailer to announce the release window for Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.

The teaser trailer itself, which can be seen below, is really simple. There’s no gameplay, but we can guess that the gameplay will be fairly similar to the likes in Ingress and Pokemon Go. I have to wonder how WB and Niantic plan to integrate the Harry Potter aspect though.

Fans have already been thoroughly disappointed by Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, a mobile game which took the wonderful source material and lazily shoehorned it into a cash-grab mobile game will extremely restrictive and annoying gameplay. It was essentially a Harry Potter Facebook game, and I’m pretty suspicious of how this new title will turn out.  We’ll just have to wait and see though.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will blend the augmented reality aspects of previous Niantic games with the Harry Potter franchise. The players will use their phones as “wands”, their medium for interaction with the magical world. We can expect the phone “wands” being used to cast spells, fulfill quests, maybe even dueling other wizards. There’s also some speculation that part of the game will involve tasks like “attending classes” or working on Diagon Alley, as a means of introducing the real-world element of visiting landmarks to collect resources and such. The game will also include various recognizable characters from the books, so fans should be excited about that as well.
