Does Civilization VI have cross-play?

Canada Announced for Civilization 6: Gathering Storm

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI is a turn-based strategy game that has the player controlling a nation attempting to build power. The various civilizations on the hex-based map developer their economies and train their militaries for the eventual wars for dominance. Diplomacy and careful strategy are a big part of the game. There is a ton of fun to be had both in singleplayer and in multiplayer. The game is available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

And since the Epic Games Store just starting giving away free copies of Sid Meier’s Civilization VI this week, folks had some questions. Given the sheer number of platforms you can play on, it stands to reason that one would want to swap to another version for one reason or another. People like to take it on the go, so they may want to play Sid Meier’s Civilization VI on the Switch. So does the game allow that? Let’s find out.

You can play online obviously, and it’s pretty fun in online play. But can you play Sid Meier’s Civilization VI as a cross-platform game? Can you move your save data to a new version?

There is currently no cross-platform play in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI. This means that you won’t be able to play together across versions. There is some good news though. 2K has enabled a special feature called Unified PC Play. As the name suggests, it does allow for some cross-platform of sorts on the PC. What it does in practice is to allow PC gamers to play regardless of what PC version they have. So if you have Steam and your buddy gets the game via Epic, you can still game together. Console gamers are still out of luck though, the PC crowd are the ones getting all the love.

You do need to have a 2K account to use Unified PC Play. You also need one if you plan to change platforms as well. Here’s how that works.

Lucky for those who want to change platforms, that part is easy. Cross-platform saves are supported on all versions for PC and consoles, except the PS4. Go to the official 2K website and set up your 2K profile for starters. Sign into the version where you have your old save data via your new 2K account. From there, select Multi-Platform Cloud Save in the options. The game will prompt you to open up the version of the game you wish to move to, Login to the new version and start playing, your 2K account should port your save data.
