Ace Combat 7 gameplay from Gamescom 2018

Gamescom 2018 may be over, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still some fun to be had. In this case it’s some gameplay from a section of one mission in Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown.

The gameplay itself focuses on a mission called “Long Day”, and the title is pretty apt, as things go very quickly from bad to worse for pilots of the penal air group, Spare Squadron. And yes, they’re a group of disposable pilots who are nothing more than cannon fodder as they assist in an attack on an Elucian base, mostly by attacking AA emplacements and soaking up enemy bullets. The gameplay ends right as an air battle between Spare Squadron and a group of encroaching Erusean drones is about to commence.

One interesting tidbit is that the demo we see below includes the F/A-18F, which has not been shown in any previous gameplay or trailer.

Bandai Namco sure aren’t shying away from the story in this game either, judging from this gameplay. As “Trigger” and the rest of Spare Squadron fight for survival, they’ll surely uncover more and more unsavory elements of the conflicts between Osea and Erusea.

If you’re interested in learning about the game, check in on the new planes and weather systems in Ace Combat 7, or maybe you want to take a peek at the story. There’s also another snippet from Gamescom in the form of shorter gameplay trailer.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown debuts on PS4, Xbox One  January 18, 2019. While PC gamers will have to wait a bit, the PC version launches February 1, 2019.
