Rusty Weapons in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity are a bit of a mystery. When you’re improving your gear there are so many options and choices to consider. If you’re trying to fuse weapons to get something more powerful, rusty weapons might not seem like much, but they’re actually pretty important.

First things first, what do they do? How do you use them? Here are the basics.

How to Use Rusty Weapons in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

At some point in the game, you will start seeing Rusty Weapons in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. Don’t get rid of these yet. There’s no obvious set point for when they show up, it will happen fairly early into the game though. When you get to a certain point in the game, you will be able to unlock their power.

You first need to unlock the option to remove rust. During the quest “From Rusty to Trusty,” you will find that you need to bring some materials to the Smith Guild. This happens after you complete “Freeing Korok Forest” in Chapter 3. Bring the following materials to unlock the recipe:

  • 1 Octorok Tentacle
  • 1 Octorok Eyeball
  • 2 Octo Balloons
  • 10 Octorok Trophies

Octo-Polish will now be available in the Blacksmith menu when you bring him these materials. You can then use this option to remove the rust from the item and reveal its stats. You will need to bring a few materials with you to polish the weapon, these are:

  • 5 Minerals
  • 30 Monster parts
  • 100 Trophies

Gather some of this stuff and you’re ready to begin. Head over to the Smith’s Guild and start by unlocking any weapons you have already in your storage. The weapons are stored by character, so be thorough when checking for any rusted items. You can use any materials you like in the process. I would suggest going for the cheaper and easier to find stuff first, as you should have plenty of trophies from trash mobs lying around.

The outcome is dependent on RNG, so there’s no obvious way to predict what the outcome of a polishing run will be. The rusty weapons seem to be tilted towards higher-end drops though, so it’s a good way to earn some potentially very powerful items for your most-used characters. You will often notice that these weapons have high base stats too. That makes them very useful for Fusing as well. Combine some weapons you don’t use with a good base weapon to make the ultimate bit of gear.
