How to find Maps and buried treasure in Minecraft

Buried treasure is a naturally generated structure consisting of a buried loot chest. The chest is buried primarily in beaches, and rarely in the ocean floor. Buried treasure is the only source of the heart of the sea, and it’s used for the Conduits. It’s very hard to find, and relies on the Explorer’s Map mechanic.

The buried treasure can be a pretty hard secret to find if you don’t know where to look. You need to find multiple parts of the process to unlock the treasure. While it’s not as lucrative as the Haunted Mansions, it’s still pretty cool. You will also always have to dig for it, as it will never spawn in the open air. Anyway, here’s the basic process.

Digging up the Treasure

The map works like a normal Minecraft map, but has a few unique features. For one thing, it’s entirely blocked out when you first look at it. Also, the red X marks the location of the treasure chest. You need to trek along the map and check periodically. Once you have the proper direction, just keep going until you reach the X.

Once you know where to look, it’s time to follow the map and start digging. When you get to the X on the map, go crazy.

There is a trick to finding the chests, if you’re willing to break the immersion a bit. In Java Edition, buried treasure always generates at chunk coordinate 9 on both the X and Z axes, and are always facing east. In Bedrock Edition, buried treasure always generates at chunk coordinate 8 on the X and Z axes.

Finding the chest can be kind of challenging normally, so expect to do some digging. When you do find it, you can get Ingots, Diamonds, Heart of the Sea, and more cool loot.
