How to farm Luck in Guild Wars 2

Hero Points in Guild Wars 2 Guide

There are many different systems in this MMO that you need to learn. Even just the incredibly intricate crafting system in GW2 is a maze of systems to navigate. This guide will help you navigate one of the core systems related to loot, luck. And with the Lunar New Year going on this week, this becomes important.

What is Luck in Guild Wars 2?

Luck is a game mechanic that increases magic find for all characters on the account. The amount of luck you have can be seen in the achievement tab of the hero panel (default key: H); the progress bar shows the amount of luck you need to get one more percentage point of magic find. The higher the number, the more likely you are to get rarer drops, both from loot and salvaging. Luck can also affect how much Gold you make from salvaging, both directly and indirectly. There are a total of 300 levels of Luck you can achieve.

Each container in the game, be it a loot bag dropped from an enemy or reward chest has a set loot pool. Certain ones have the ability to be affected by Magic Find. The bag will say it’s affected when you look at the tooltip. These special items are affected by magic find:

  • Containers received from reward tracks, generally called “Loot box” or “cache”, which simulate loot drops from the named NPC.
  • Chests and containers specifically mention being affected by it, such as:
    • Lost Bandit Chests in the Silverwastes.
    • Caches and loot boxes from Heart of Thorns content.
    • Divine Lucky Envelopes and Lucky Red Bags during Lunar New Year.

How to increase Luck

The only form you will find consumable Luck in, is Essences of Luck. These often come from salvaging, so it’s a good idea to learn about the different salvage kits. Some of the basic kinds of salvage kits are limited-use, while paid variants from the Gemstore consume currency on each use. There are gathering tools you can buy from the Gemstore as well,  and it’s strongly recommended if you’re trying to min-max gathering output.

There are five tiers of Essences of Luck in the game:

  • Fine: 10 luck
  • Masterwork: 50 luck
  • Rare: 100 luck
  • Exotic: 200 luck
  • Legendary: 500 luck

The best approach to farming Luck in Guild Wars 2 is to save every booster you can find that grants Magic Find or increases Luck until you plan to use them. These boosts only last a short time, so you need to trigger as many as you can, then spam out your salvaging or loot box opening to get the best loot. By having high Magic Find, you also increase the odds of more Luck dropping from loot boxes. It’s best to set all the containers affected by Magic Find aside, then to pop them all at once when you cap your Luck or can use Magic Find boosters.
