Assassin’s Creed Valhalla River Raids update live now

Assassin's Creed Valhalla Settlement Upgrade Guide

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Yule Season has begun. The newest patch for the game has a new feature in it that you’ll quite like. You will need to be on your toes though, as this is dangerous. The new centerpiece of the game are River Raids. Much like the Vikings of history, you’re going out on raids to claim resources and territory from your enemies. So anyway, what are these River Raids?

The River Raids in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla offers a pathway to new riches and endless spoils of war. You’re going to be going out and laying claim to the untouched wilds and villages beyond the shores of England in this new patch. The patch adds a new River Raiding Dock that has an entirely new gameplay loop in it.

Head to the Boat Dock and find the new NPC there, Vagn. He will introduce the basics of the new system and tell you how to begin.

How to start Assassin’s Creed Valhalla River Raids

Once you’ve downloaded the update for River Raids, 1.12, a new quest will kick off that tells you about them. Look for the quest called A River to Raid. The quest will direct you to the dock of your main settlement, and there you will find a new NPC, Vagn. When you meet up with him and he will tell you to prepare your forces for a raid. They will allow you to pick a target. Choosing your targets for River Raids carefully is key, as they will upgrade their defenses if attacked too many times.

You will notice that each time you trigger one of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla River Raids, there’s an alert meter on the screen ticking up. That’s your cue to pay attention to. Let that alert get too high and the settlement or river spot you’re attacking will become much harder to take on. What you’re meant to do is to upgrade your Jomsviking and the rest of your forces with the resources you claim from early raids. When you do that, you should be able to go on tougher missions. The monasteries and military targets provide the most resources, but carry much higher defenses and risk.

So why go raiding? Simple, because you want the loot, silly. You need to uncover a bunch of different hidden chests during these raids. These chests are hidden everywhere. Using your Odin’s Sight out on raids can be key to spotting them. Each location that you attack can have more than one as well.

Check them out in the trailer for the update below. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is now available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and PC. The patch that adds these River Raids should auto-download when you boot the console or launcher in your specific case.
