Red Dead Redemption 2 has a Switch controller texture for some reason

Nintendo Switch

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a game well-known for packing in cultural references and easter eggs. The open world of New Hanover and beyond is packed to the rafters with hidden side quests and random jokes and references. There have been all manner of references to TV, films, video games and more. And plenty of the references have been fairly modern. Although one recently uncovered item within the game data has some people scratching their heads.

A newly uncovered image that’s circulating online has led to some suggesting that the Nintendo Switch may have been on the docket to get a port of RDR2, but this is of course just speculation. A Twitter user by the name of TezFunz2 recently found the textures of a Nintendo Switch Pro controller when digging their way through the files.

Whether it’s a buried easter egg or something else is unknown. There’s been no confirmation of a Switch port, and many in the gaming industry chuckle at the idea. The massive scale of Red Dead Redemption 2 is likely just too big for the hardware to handle. After all, WWE 2K18 ran like absolute trash on the platform, leading to many angry fans. And the bug-riddled launch of the PC port of Rockstar’s latest AAA effort left many soured on the prospect of exploring the waning days of the Old West.

And while other modern titles like Overwatch and Witcher 3 have managed ports for the console, they have had to be pared back in terms of graphical fidelity or features in order to work. It’s very likely that this is just some reference buried in the game files and left there early in development. There may have been a potential Switch port coming for this game at one point, but absent some official confirmation, there’s no way to know for sure.
