The Thargoid menace will return to terrorize Elite Dangerous’ 2.4 update, dubbed The Return. Frontier’s full announcement includes a release window of Q3 2017 (so, July-September).
Frontier is keeping pretty tight-lipped to prevent spoilers for this story-centric update. It’s clear that the focus will be fighting, or at least attempting to, the alien menace. For all the players that own Horizons the Thargoids will pose a significant impediment to their lives as commanders.
The update itself will apparently be released in phases called “story beats” throughout the months following the initial launch of 2.4. If the various teasers found throughout Elite: Dangerous promo material and the game itself are any indication, the Thargoids will be nigh impossible to eliminate completely; it will therefore be very interesting to see how Frontier handle the story progression and if the Thargoids will mysterisouly disappear from the universe this time around.
