Something that MonHun fans have been waiting for has finally arrived. During the 2019 International Shanghai Film Festival, attendees got a world-exclusive look at the new Monster Hunter film.
The film is directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, and it stars his wife Milla Jovovich, who has been in charge of the Resident Evil series since 2002. And whatever your feelings about this particular pair, I personally feel like RE films quickly became a vehicle for the worst Mary Sue character in modern films, there’s a lot of feelings about this particular project.
Even as someone who only really got back into Monster Hunter after giving up on the original PS2 version years ago, and got reinvested with Monster Hunter World, I feel like this film isn’t the wonderful homage that fans want.
In the trailer we see a handful of characters played by some rather talented actors. Tony Jaa, T.I., Ron Perlman, Diegon Boneta, and Meagan Good will be joining Milla Jovovich to play various characters. The story is a confused mish-mash of time travel plots and modern military fiction. It might really suck, we just don’t know yet.
Anderson is apparently a big fan of the Monster Hunter franchise, and he has described the film as a passion project.” Apparently it’s not enough of a passion project to get Diablos’ roar right. Listen to the trailer down at the bottom of the post, then go watch this cinematic from MHW, see how they sound to you. Maybe it’s just the distorted sound quality from the leaked recording, but the film version sounds way too bassy. It’s worth noting that the film may undergo more post-production as we’re still months away from release. The final version of the sound effects we hear could change.
I’m really not looking forward to what this film will turn into, but that’s probably my cynicism with Hollywood ruining my other favorite franchises lately. I’m still mad at Terminator: Genisys.
Monster Hunter is in theatres worldwide on September 2, 2020.
