Character customization, like many other elements of this game, is all about creativity in the Animal Crossing franchise. The ability to make your houses and your town look like they are something you enjoy has led to players in the newest Switch game come up with some very creative ideas. I’ve seen everything from quaint and rustic towns styled after iconic cities around the globe, of course, I’ve also seen houses that were styled after literal padded cells in mental institutions. So whatever you want to create, you can probably do it. One of the questions I see floating around is how to dye your hair in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

At the beginning of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the player can choose how to customize their character. But from that point, you won’t be able to dye your hair again without doing some work. You can dye your hair in Animal Crossing: New Horizons many different colors, even some rather bright synthetic colors. You just have to buy the privilege first.

The first thing you need to do is pay back the sum of 5,000 Nook Miles to Tom Nook that he loaned you at the start of the game.

The first pack of hair dyes, the Top 8 Stylish Hair Colors costs 3,000 Nook Miles. So far we’re up to 8,000 Nook Miles just to dye our hair. If you want to do some more shopping, there are some gameplay-affecting tools you will need later. There’s the Pocket Organization Guide (5,000 miles) to give you more space, and the Pretty Good Tools Recipes (3,000 miles) to upgrade your tools, consider buying these first.

So in all, to dye your hair in this game, you need to collect 16,000 Nook Miles.

Now onto the actual process of dyeing the hair. After you have your new hair colors purchased, you need one more tool. In short, you must own a mirror. There are two ways to get one, with one being a bit more random but potentially faster than the other method. You can collect your message in a bottle each day and hope that you get the DIY Recipe for the mirror. The other method is to shoot down present boxes with the slingshot, and hope that the needed tools drop for you.

Once you have a mirror, you can set it up wherever you like, just walk up to it and press A to customize the look of your avatar.
