Can You Play Rust Single Player?

Rust coming to consoles in 2020

Survival and multiplayer games are meant to be played with others. The PvP and social elements are an important part of what makes the game engaging. You will always want to play along with others in games like Rust to really enjoy them. There are sometimes ways to enjoy these kinds of games solo as well, although it’s not ideal.

When it comes to Rust, you can certainly play with others and have a great time. If you don’t want to deal with other people, or just want to try the game out without dealing with multiplayer, there are options. So can you play Rust single player? Let’s find out what can be done about that.

Can You Play Rust Single Player?

The game is server-based, so it can’t be run entirely offline. Players have to host and join other servers to play with each other. You will need to host a server to play with just your pals. There are security and performance concerns with hosting your own server though, so maybe look into renting a server for the game if you want to go that route. You can still run the game in single player, it’s just a bit annoying to set up.

There is a way around this though. You can use the official Rust server utility from the game’s website and use it to launch your own server. Here’s how to get that running:

  1. Download and extract the server utility
  2. Run the “Run_DS.bat” executable
  3. Run Rust
  4. Press F1 to open the command console and type client.connect localhost:28015
  5. Press Enter to run that command

This will allow your local PC to host its own localized version of the game, using the current build of the game’s code. Players won’t be on this sever obviously, as it’s not hosted publicly, but that’s the price you pay for playing Rust single player. At the very least you can entertain yourself with the game on your own, as much as can be done without other players around.
