Apex Legends Bug Erases Save Data

Apex Legends

A new bug has been uncovered in the popular battle royale title, Apex Legends, and it’s making the game unplayable for some. According to reports from the team, the bug surfaced as a result of changes introduced in the 1.1 patch.

The bug seemed to manifest as a loss of data, and it appeared to be a primarily behind-the-scenes issues as it was affecting many platforms and seemed to be a case of server errors. Respawn lept into action and began working on a fix, but gamers were still a bit miffed.

After a bit of an uproar online, Respawn was able to resolve the bug. The way they did this was to essentially apply a patch to the networking code to ensure that data was being synced properly with the backend, but there was one little thing that Respawn did that’s sure to make players either happy or angry. And that thing was a data rollback of sorts.

Here’s the two things the developer rolled back.

  • Any in-game purchases and progress acquired during the time between 1.1 going live and the fix will be reverted – levels earned, items unlocked, packs opened, and spent currency. If you continued to play and didn’t patch then this will not affect you.

  • Any currency purchased, spent or not, will be carried back over to their original account state. i.e. – if you bought $20 worth of coins, and spent $18, then you’ll will get $20 after the fix.

What these kinds of issues reveal is that the nature of fast-paced development within the games industry sometimes leads to a substantive lack of quality assurance and testing. Whether this particular bug means that the 1.1 update could have used more love is hard to say, as it’s all but impossible to catch every bug, even major ones, before code goes live.
