How to unlock dogs in Sea of Thieves

How to unlock dogs in Sea of Thieves

The developers of Sea of Thieves have big plans for the future of the game. Along with new voyages planned in the coming year, you will be able to find a new furry friend to join you in your journeys. Dogs will be included in the game in the coming update.

There is some very big and cute stuff coming in Sea of Thieves. During Gamescom 2020 this past week, Rare was on hand to reveal something very cool indeed. Cats, parrots, and monkeys are already in the game, and now we’re getting doggies too. There are still some details to work out, but it looks like there will be three breeds of dogs in Sea of Thieves to choose from at the start.

Dogs will bring “charm and humour to the game in the usual Sea of Thieves style,” Rare’s Joe Neate explains, “but unfortunately they also bring other pretty familiar dog traits. So mind where you step when you’re out on the boat.”

The update detailing the dogs and other additions coming next month also came with some gameplay footage. Check that out if you want to see some cuddly furry friends ahead of time. The new update is due next month, during Summer events. Summer of Sea of Thieves ends on 30th September, whereas the Hunters of the Deep comes to a close on 8th September. I suspect the next update will come shortly after that.

These pet options, just like all of the others, are locked into the Pirate Emporium. Players will have to use the micro-transaction currency, Ancient Coins, all at different prices. There will be multiple breeds to choose from as well. It has not been confirmed, but the idea seems to be that there will be sets like Ashen Dragon or Golden Curse added for dogs at some point.

As for prices, those have been revealed in some measure, but it’s likely that Rare will add more as time goes on. The assumption is that the dogs in Sea of Thieves will be priced similarly to other pet options at 499 Ancient Coins. There are also suspicions that special variants, like a dog belonging to a ghostly special theme, will also run around similar prices at 649 Ancient Coins. That prices out to about $5 USD for a base dog assuming prices are the same.

Here are the current prices of Ancient Coin bundles:

  • Secret Stash of the Ancients (150 Ancient Coins) – $1.99
  • Lost Chest of the Ancients (550 Ancient Coins) – $5.99
  • Hidden Trove of the Ancients (1000 Ancient Coins) – $9.99
  • Royal Treasury of the Ancients (2550 Ancient Coins) – $22.99
  • Glittering Tribute of the Ancients (4250 Ancient Coins) – $34.99

How to get Ancient Coins

You don’t have to buy the Coins though, unless you want immediate access to the content when it drops in September. There is another way to get Ancient Coins, and that’s by killing Ancient Skeletons.

Ancient Skeletons will show up as blue and gold unique bosses. These will have a sack on their back as well as the unique coloring. Each time you kill one, which won’t be easy, you get a small bundle of Coins. However, there’s a problem. The spawn rate for Ancient Skeletons is so low that it’s extremely rare to get a spawn, and there seems to be no easy way to farm them. It will take a lot of time to get enough Coins to afford the new dogs in Sea of Thieves.
