1000-player battle royale game Mavericks: Proving Grounds is canceled

So the developer behind one of the more promising Battle Royale titles, Mavericks: Proving Grounds, has gone the way of the dinos. Automaton Games is no more, and the game is now canceled.

The developer behind the project, Automaton Games, has filed for administration as part of bankruptcy proceedings. The two projects the studio has worked on, the in-progress Mavericks: Proving Grounds and the already released Deceit, are both up in the air as of now. And unless a new development team picks up the former, it is now likely to never see the light of day.

“Paul Cooper and Paul Appleton were appointed joint administrators of Automaton Games Limited on 30th July 2019. They are managing the affairs, business and property of the company. The joint administrators act as agents of the company and act without personal liability. Paul Cooper and Paul Appleton are licensed to act as insolvency practitioners in UK by the ICAEW,” the Automaton website now states.

It’s sad to see another studio go under and we hope that those affected by this closure land on their feet.

Mavericks: Proving Grounds was being pushed as essentially Planetside Arena, but not hot garbage. There was even a public beta planned for this November, that’s obvious not happening now. There is still a possibility for the game to be sold whole hog to another developer, or licensed out as is being done with Deceit, but no news on that front as of yet. So if you’re still hopeful for a massive battle royale title to compete with Fortnite, keep holding on to that hope, you’re gonna need it.
