Free-to-play card games have always been kind of loathed by a certain subset of gamers. Being that card games in the real world are undeniably pay-to-win, given that you need to buy the best in-meta cards to create a competitive deck, people are quick to dismiss digital versions of games in this genre pretty quickly.
Eternal, a free-to-play online collectible card video game developed and published by Dire Wolf Digital, sought to break that convention by making a card game that was actually free-to-play without being a huge and soul-destroying grindfest. And being that’s it’s a digital card game, it’s designed to be really easy to pick up and learn.
The game includes both singleplayer and multiplayer modes, even complete with a full story-driven campaign for each faction. Just like in games like Hearthstone and MTG, the play is fluid and smooth, and the mechanics are easy to grasp. The visual style, card design and general mechanics surrounding the meta-game should be fairly intuitive as well.
Eternal has been around for a while on PC, but it’s finally come to a new platform with a launch on the Xbox One. The Xbox version will include all of the content from the PC game, and the real good news is that every card can be earned through consistent play, and all without spending hundreds of hours grinding like in some other digital titles in the genre.
