New Walking Dead VR game, Onslaught, has been announced

The Walking Dead Onslaught Announced

So it turns out that multiple VR projects are in the works for a fiction franchise you might have heard of by the name of The Walking Dead. A new project from called The Walking Dead Onslaught is in production, and even has a new trailer.

Judging from what little we saw of the game in the new announcement trailer, there will be plenty of callbacks and references to the comics and TV show that helped build the success of this landmark brand. Characters like Rick, Michonne, Daryl and more all have little references buried in the new trailer, so it’s safe to assume players will hack, slash and shoot zombies right alongside them.

As far as story or other details, we know that players will once again step into the shoes of Rick Grimes to battle zombies and rogue humans in some fashion, probably in massive numbers. The project is being developed by the experienced team at Survios-the same developers who brought us Creed: Rise to Glory and the VR music rhythm game Electronauts.

The gameplay is still pretty vague but the devs are definitely going for an action feel. According to the press release for the game, the company behind it is going for an “exclusive original story, visceral real-motion melee and ranged combat, player progression and a full campaign mode.” All of this will be the central pillars of the experience, and it will be very exciting to see where this game goes. I just have to hope that it won’t falter like other action games built on the franchise like Starbreeze’s panned The Walking Dead effort, or the equally maligned The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct by Terminal Reality.

If you’re into that idea, you can check out the teaser trailer down below. No word yet on a release date or platforms though. Although so far we have learned that the team is aiming to release this new game in Autumn 2019.

This isn’t even the only VR game set in the popular zombie fiction either. So if you;re looking for more of this type of stuff, other projects have you covered. The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners was announced last year. The VR project is being worked on by Skydance Interactive, the same team who made Archangel: Hellfire. The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners is due to release later in 2019.
