How to EV train your Pokémon in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Where to find Choice Scarf in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

The reincarnation of the classic DS Pokémon games has exploded in popularity. Trainers all over the globe are jumping back into the Sinnoh region for a good time. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have a lot to offer both new and old players. There are some Trainers who want every edge in the game they can find.

Training your Pokémon in a variety of ways can be helpful for increasing their stats. There’s items you can get, but also breeding for solid IVs is a good idea. EV training is one of the many things you can do. THe EV concept is a way for Pokémon to alter their stats by taking on certain fights, or using specific moves. When you want to EV train your Pokémon, here’s what to do.

How to train your Pokémon’s EVs in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

There are two ways to increase EVs when you want to EV train your Pokémon. You can use Vitamins, but that’s pretty expensive. Most Trainers will instead make use of a series of battles to increase EV. The vitamins can be bought at the Veilstone Department Store for 9,800 Pokédollars each. Here’s what each one does.

  • Calcium (Special Attack)
  • Carbos (Speed)
  • Iron (Defense)
  • HP Up (HP)
  • Protein (Attack)
  • Zinc (Special Defense)

The EV points are also trained as a monster levels up. Each Pokémon can only have a maximum of 510 EV, and each stat can only have up to 252 EV points. EV points are gained by a Pokémon when they win a fight—regardless of whether its a KO or capture. The type of the Pokémon defeated will give an EV point to the victor.

But sometimes you need to focus on a specific stat. If you have a high Special Attack Pokémon that you want better scaling that stat, you may need to remove points from other EVs. You can use a method to lower EVs as well. Targeted farming of Berries to reduce EV is pretty simple, here’s how it works.

How to lower EVs

The first berry you use to lower EVs drops the value for that stat to 100, regardless of it initial value. Each time you feed a monster a berry, it lowers the stat by 10 more points.

Here is the breakdown of the berries you can use to get lower EVs.

  • Hondew Berry (lowers Special Attack)
  • Kelpsy Berry (lowers Attack)
  • Pomeg Berry (lowers HP)
  • Qualot Berry (lowers Defense)
  • Tamato Berry (lowers Speed)

You can buy both Vitamins and Berries at the Battle Park for one BP each, provided you have unlocked it after the Elite Four.
