Star Citizen’s Single-Player Squadron 42 Will Let you Play a Female

Star Citizen Alpha

During a livestream hosted by Cloud Imperium Games, Star Citizen Director Chris Roberts talked about some quite interesting details on the game’s single-player campaign Squadron 42.

One of the bigger announcements is that players can choose to play as either a male or female protagonist. Players will be able to customize the looks of their character and to import it into the persistent universe as well. Alpha 3.1 and future versions will have their character creation adjusted over time to include these and other expanded features.

There’s no word yet on when this will be implemented into the game. The current focus is on perfecting the animations for the male PC, and then the developers will port the work over to the female PC with some adjustments.

Chris Roberts also talked about how the mission structure will work in Squadron 42.

Squadron 42 has a variety of tasks to complete; and by completing these, you both advance the story and unlock certain benefits in the Star Citizen persistent universe. These include unlocking special NPCs that provide missions and custom gear that they’ll sell you. You don’t need to necessarily finish the single-player to unlock some perks though. The most important ones will unlock as part of normal story progression. Some of the things the player can do are optional, so you’ll get the related unlock only if you actually do them.

There are also some multiplayer missions that you can undertake with friends in Squadron 42, these should have single-player equivalents as well according to CIG.

The goal here is to use Squadron 42 as a story backdrop for players in the PU. The in-universe framing is that the events of the single-player are something that occurred in the past of the PC in the persistent universe.

Squadron 42 is actually a trilogy, formed by three episodes, and all of them will be set before the persistent universe.

The second and third episodes will take a shorter time to make than the first, as the technology will be already in place. Roberts mentioned that he thinks that Episode 2 and 3 will develop in a similar way to Wing Commander 2 and 3 compared to the first.

The Coil and the Odin system that we saw in the vertical slice of Squadron 42 will also appear in the persistent universe, even if not at launch.
