Croteam, the developer behind Serious Sam and The Talos Principle, has teamed up with Devolver Digital as the latter has bought out the former. And of course, the news was announced with the signature tongue-in-cheek style of the publisher. The news was broken via Twitter, check out that tweet below.
In a joint statement, the companies laid out their motivations and plans for the deal. The latest game to come out via Croteam is Serious Sam 4. Serious Sam 4 is available now for PC and Google Stadia. The new game was pretty well-received via reviews, as the classic shooter gave fans a shot of nostalgia.
Croteam has been a force in the industry for a while, thanks in big part to the Serious Sam franchise. These two companies had some connection through Gathering of Developers, which helped get the franchise off the ground with Serious Sam: The First Encounter in 2001. That group then went on to found Devolver Digital in 2009. So in a way, the Croteam folks are back where they started.
Going further, the company revealed some interesting statements about how they feel about their games, and teased some future work. “We are extremely happy and proud to announce that Croteam has become a part of the Devolver Digital family. Our relationship goes back decades, and we’re very excited to make it even deeper with this move. Here’s to many years of amazing Devolver Digital games by Croteam!” The team said as much on Twitter.
Going deeper into the news, we see that Croteam and Devolver are pretty happy to work together. “What’s certain is that our future together is ultra exciting with new projects like The Talos Principle 2, more Serious Sam games, and original IP from Croteam and the Croteam Incubator studios,” the statement reads. “Croteam will of course keep total creative freedom and Devolver Digital gets to keep making dumb recommendations that Croteam just ignores – we prefer it that way.”
“Both companies are thrilled to share this news and hope that you’re as excited about our future together as we are – it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
