How to make rails in Minecraft

With how huge worlds are in Minecraft, you may need some help getting around. There are many different ways to travel in the game, and some are faster than others. You could tame horses or other animals to use as mounts, or you could invoke some magical solutions. If you’re going for a more industrialized world though, you may want to look into rails and minecarts. Rails in Minecraft can be powered via Redstone signals and transport across vast distances.

Rails are really useful for getting players and items across vast differences in the game. The Rails are easy to make, but they take a lot of resources. You will want to measure the distance you want to run ahead of time and do the math for how many rails you need for your planned construction. The amount of Wood and Iron you need will be determined by your distances planned to travel.

Although to get rails in Minecraft over any significant distance, you’re going to need a lot of them. The rails and other materials are very easy to make at least. To make the basic rails, all you need is wood and iron in steady supply. Once you have that it’s time to get started.

First, you’ll need the necessary tools to craft rails. You will need to have a crafting table, which you should already have from your first moments in the game. The basic rail recipe involves six Iron Ingots and one Stick. Lay them out in the crafting grid with the Iron Ingots in the outer two columns, with the Stick in the very center space. Each iteration of this recipe will make 16 basic rails. These are different from powered rails, which carry a Redstone signal and speed up carts.

So for every 16 blocks you want to travel in a straight line, do the math and make the plan to get the right amount of Iron and Wood that you need. You will also need a Redstone rail, or powered Rail. Powered rails can be crafted and previously-placed powered rails can be broken with bare hands or any tool, dropping themselves as items. Here’s how to make Powered Rail.
