Lunar New Year for 2021 is the year of the Ox, which means Tauros is a big star this year in Pokémon Go. Although it also means that Niantic has enabled a new in-game event for their smash-hit mobile title this week as well. And that means Special Research Tasks are back again. These event-based tasks are pretty simple, and you can earn some sweet rewards for doing them.
The Lunar New Year 2021 event will take place from February 9 to the 14. During that time, you have plenty of chances to complete the Lunar New Year 2021 Special Research Tasks. Here are the basics of each task in the list below. Feel free to check them out to see what you’re getting yourself into. a big focus this year is on Mega Gyarados, which means encounters, Energy and Candy are up for grabs in the event.
Just like any other special research events in the game, each one completed means special rewards and encounters. Each Lunar New Year 2021 special research task includes a bunch of different tasks you can do, and a few rewards for each one. Most of these involve making perfect throws with captures, or catching Fire-type Pokémon, so get moving.
You can earn Pokéballs of various types, as well as random Pokémon encounters that can be good for shinies. Use the list below to find out each of the tasks and their associated rewards.
Task 1
- Transfer 12 Pokémon – 10 Poké Balls
- Catch 7 Fire-type Pokémon – Charmander encounter
- Send 1 gift to a friend – Goldeen encounter
Rewards: 20 Mega Gyarados energy, 1,000 XP, and a Miltank encounter
Task 2
- Power up Pokémon 12 times – 5 Razz berries
- Evolve 3 Fire-type Pokémon – Torchic encounter
- Send 3 gifts to friends – Magikarp encounter
Rewards: 30 Mega Gyarados energy, 1,000 XP, and a Tauros encounter
Task 3
- Use 12 berries to help catch Pokémon – 10 Poké Balls
- Catch 15 Fire-type Pokémon – Tepig encounter
- Send 5 gifts to friends – Seaking encounter
Rewards: 50 Mega Gyarados energy, 1,000 XP, and a Miltank encounter
Task 4
- Make 12 great curveball throws – 3 Pinap berries
- Catch 20 Fire-type Pokémon – Darumaka Encounter
- Send 7 gifts to friends – Meditite encounter
Rewards: 100 Mega Gyarados energy, 1,500 XP, and a Tauros encounter
