The Pokémon Go Johto Celebration Event is live this week and offers some new captures and a ton of rewards for Trainers looking to take part. We’re getting increased spawns, special Eggs, and some Raid bosses too. The big focus is on introducing a new generation of Pokémon to the mobile game. This time, we’re jumping back into Gen 2 and getting some of the iconic starters and other Pokémon, like best boy Totodile.
When does the Johto Celebration Event start?
The Johto Celebration Event is active from January 26 through January 31 at 8 PM Local Time. Players have until February 7 to redeem awards for the timed tasks. After that, you’re out of luck for the rewards and encounters.
So let’s talk about what needs to be done in that time.
The new Johto Celebration Event is a big part of how Niantic is trying to get players back into the game. There’s new Legendary Pokémon to catch, as well as a new Johto Collection Challenge to undertake. In this new challenge, you have to catch the likes of Larvitar, Sudowoodo and more. But aside from all that fun, there are also the Research Tasks and unique rewards for the Pokémon Go Johto Celebration Event.
So far, two of the timed Research Tasks have been unlocked. As with previous challenge bundles, completing each one will hand out a variety of different rewards. players completing these tasks can earn Pokéballs, Incense packs, Revives and more. And of course, you can also get one-off encounters with Pokémon that are part of the Collection Challenge.
Here are the Pokémon Go Johto Celebration Event Research tasks and rewards:
Task 1
- Catch 15 Dark-type Pokemon: 5 Great Balls
- Catch 15 Shadow-type Pokemon: 5 Revives
- Defeat a Team GO Rocket Leader three times: Larvitar Encounter
- Rewards: Poke Ball x15, Incense, 5000 XP
Task 2
- Defeat Team GO Rocket Leader Arlo: Max Revive x2
- Defeat Team GO Rocket Leader Cliff: Hyper Potion x2
- Defeat Team GO Rocket Leader Sierra: Max Potion x2
- Rewards: A Ho-Oh encounter with Earthquake
