World War Z sparks Season 2 of new content with free flamethrower

World War Z Season 2 Begins

Ever since World War Z launched this past April gamers have been having tons of fun dealing with the massive swarms of flesh-hungry ghouls that stalk it’s digital landscapes. The game is a co-op zombie shooter built around working as a team to clear infested cities of zombie hordes. The shooting is fast and frantic, evoking a lot of the same stylistic choices and reactions from older titles like Left4Dead.

The game builds its stories out of each set piece level, having a major city act as the backdrop for the backstory of a given survivor. Players join together to play through the harrowing journey of each of these survivors, which usually results in mowing down hordes of the undead with an array of creative and destructive weapons. You can choose from six different character classes, each with their own specializations and weapon focuses too, offering more variety of the destruction.

Saber Interactive was not really content with just the base formula though, and have been continually expanding the game with consistent DLC and free updates. These patches fix bugs, but more importantly introduce new content to the zombie shooter. These updates introduced both new weapons and survivors, adding entirely new story branches to the path players take through the narrative.

The developer previously teased the latest update, titled Kill it With Fire, as part of the Season 2 roadmap. And given that this is a live services title, we can expect more patches and new content soon. Saber has even committed to more game modes and more missions later in this cycle. But there’s actually a fair bit in this cycle already. And yes, as the name implies, players will finally have a flamethrower as a weapons option.

The development team has now implemented a prestige system that will allow players to reset their progress in order to earn special rewards. This new mechanic should give veteran players something to chase after they have run through the story several times.

In terms of story content, there are two new missions in the game. The first is a new mission in the Moscow level where your group of survivors is forced underground by lingering chemical weapons which were used in a vain attempt to stop the undead. This close-quarters mission will be filled with frights and swarms that aren’t just rats. The second addition to the story is a New York affair that sees the group trying to escape via the Hudson River on a slow-moving tug boat. Expect the aquatic equivalent of an escort mission here.
