The World of Warcraft Shadowlands alpha is finally seeing the light of day this month as Blizzard brings the first phase of testing to the public. This is a closed alpha, so invites will be limited a fair bit. Those closest to the game will be getting priority with testing the new features. If you have an active account with a long history, or are a media personality, you can probably take a stab at the invite link below to shoot for the moon and hope for a code.
The publisher has not revealed detail though, so we’re flying a bit blind here as to what to expect from the upcoming test run. We do know that the final version of the expansion will include a level squish to all content in the game to make balance easier to handle. Aside from that and a few other details, it’s kind of hard to guess what’s coming. Blizzard did share a few light teases at least.
At the moment, players can experience the full level-up experience in the zone Bastion, as well as the dungeon attached to that zone, the Necrotic Wake. A new Alliance starting area will also be in the test rotation.
Of course, the scale of this deployment has been a bit pared back thanks to COVID-19. The expansion doesn’t have a full release date yet, but you still have a chance to get your hands on some of the content early. If you’re interested, make sure to sign up using the beta opt-in link.
The process of deploying the update has been necessarily scaled back a bit due to the deadly disease. Blizzard is among pretty much every other gaming company that has engaged in working from home to make things work. The team behind the MMO has been hard at work to get things out the door, but some things have been impacted. According to Ion, the Shadowlands alpha announcement was meant to be a video and deployed sooner, but that plan was nixed a while back thanks to the delays of remote work.
So despite these issues, the developer has managed to pump out some news and updates, which is pretty cool.
