What happens when you get bitten in Project Zomboid?

How to heal a Deep Wound in Project Zomboid

Being a zombie survival game, Project Zomboid has a few core threats. The biggest one is obviously the undead. Being bitten is a pretty major threat, the big one, actually. Players already have to deal with infections and diseases that might take them out. Folks even get to deal with all the lack of food and other resources. This game certainly doesn’t make things easier.

The big threat comes when you find that you’ve been bitten by a zombie. Getting bitten is a big issue, but so is getting scratched by a zombie, so you have to be ready to respond. Whilst scratches are a bad injury to sustain, but bites are far more likely to be lethal. Here are some tips for how to deal with the situation.

Getting Bitten In Project Zomboid

To check your status, you need to open the Health menu on the left, that’s the big heart-shaped button. When you do, look over the body and see if you see bitten anywhere. This Heart icon will often shake when you’re wounded to give you a clue, so be sure to keep an eye on it. When you do see a bit, you have some trouble ahead.

A few things will happen when you’re bitten. Aside from the infection that’s slowly spreading, you also have to deal with the bleeding wound. That’s a matter of suturing it up and keeping it clean. First, you should disinfect the wound with something like alcohol or a disinfectant item. You can use items like sterilized bandages or adhesive bandages that you find around to cover it up. Keep an eye on the wound and make sure to change it to a fresh covering every few days.

Once the bite is closed, you can turn towards trying to survive it. Bad news though, there’s no way you’re going to survive a bite. The thing to remember is that zombie infection is fatal over 3-4 days and has no cure. After death an infected body will arise as a zombie. That means you’re likely to turn into a zombie. A bite has a 100% chance of causing a zombie infection. Scratches and laceration wounds have a much lower chance, topping out at 25% for lacerations.

The only way to avoid this is to drink bleach. If you’re playing multiplayer, that’s an option for your to choose. This will avoid you from rising as a zombie if caught early enough. That will make it easier to recover your loot when you respawn. Yes, the loot on your body when you turn remains on your newly reanimated corpse.

There are plenty of other things to learn about the game as well. Before you go out on that supply run, make sure you’re well prepared for what’s to come. Basic tasks like boiling water are key to survival. You must know how to build defenses too. Cleaning up after yourself after all the zombie-slaying is a good idea. You don’t want a bunch of blood hanging around. Burning corpses is also a great thing to do.
