Disc Chips in Monster Rancher games are a very special rare drop. In both games, they can be obtained from a few sources. Based on the Mystery Discs introduced in the source material, players may find them around the game world. They are actually one of the more important items in the game, even if they don’t seem like it. You will actually find yourself using them a lot when crafting S-tier monsters.
What are Disc Chips in Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX?
Disc Chips have the same use in both games in Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX. They are both used for Combining, or the process of taking a base monster and turning it into something new. You would first freeze the monster you wish to use as a the Main species, then combine it with a second monster of a different species. Some trainers will opt for using purebred monsters, but it’s possible to use already combined Hybrids as well. Disc Chips in Monster Rancher games can be used to alter the final outcome of Combination. This can be useful if you want a specific breed and don’t know what CD to use. They also have a secondary use with Regeneration in some games.
The big difference with using Chips in combinations is that they pass on stat alterations and secret abilities. Most species have a hidden combination bonus when used with a “chipped” monster. Zuums are known for their ability to run and so confer a +1 bonus to the Run drill, for example.
In MR1, Disc Chips are called CD Fragments, but do the same thing. They can be won at the Winter D, C, and B Cups in Feb, the Spring D, C, and B Cups in May, the Summer D, C, and B Cups in Aug, and the Fall D, C, and B Cups in Nov. You can farm these pretty reliably for a few Disc Chips, but the better way to get them is through Expeditions. In the second game, they work the same, and can be won in some tournaments. But primarily, they are found on expeditions. Remember to get high INT to find items, and raise LIF to have plenty of Energy on Expeditions.
