Trine 4 Announced for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC

Publisher Modus Games and developer Frozenbyte have announced the next game in the Trine series. Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince is coming soon.

“We are absolutely thrilled to embark on this journey with Frozenbyte,” said Christina Seelye, CEO of Modus Games. “There’s no doubt Trine 4 will be the game players have been asking for.”

While details are pretty scarce, we can guess a bit about how that game and story will work ahead of the release next year. A Gauntlet-style game that started as a 2D platformer with an over-saturated and colorful visual style. The games involved a well-crafted brew of co-op platforming action and creative puzzles that tested gamers patience while feeding them tons of hack n’ slash action bits sprinkled in with tons of exploration.

Trine as a series is mix of 2D and 3D games with a fantasy-action spin. The original game came out 2009 for PC and PlayStation 3, and was eventually ported to multiple other platforms such as Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4, and Wii U. The following games in the franchise were released until 2015 when Trine 3 debuted. The core platforming mechanics persisted throughout all games, but Trine 3 made some serious missteps when switching to 3D presentation. Fans weren’t happy with the change, and it’s generally led to Trine 3 being the worst game in the franchise. Modus Games acknowledges this and wants to make it clear that the newest game will be returning to the 2D roots of the series.
