Throughout your travels in Torchlight III, you’ll find a ton of gear and consumables. The various items can be sold for currency of course, but they have another use. Torchlight 3 Enchantment is the best way to make use of your old and unused items. The player will eventually unlock the Enchantment Altar and be able to make use of magic to improve gear.
How Enchantment works
To Enchant your items, you will need to use the Enchanting Altar in your Fort. Each item is broken down into certain categories, and each category has its own set of available enhancements. You can gain improvements for a variety of attacks and buffs against certain enemy types. Magic, Rare and Legendary Items can have 1-3 Enchantment Slots. The only items that can have 3 slots are Phasic or Lifebound gear.
Make sure to complete the various side quests and other content so that you can unlock all the enchanting stuff. You will also need various resources inside your inventory that can be used for enchanting recipes. The recipes will list the various items you need. And just like other items and stuff, the resources are shared across all your characters on your account.
Most of the items you need come from breaking down items via the resource window. Just open up the items tab in the Altar and find some items you want to break down for essences. By default, you’ll just need to mouse over an item and hold right-click (or the Y button if you’re using an Xbox gamepad). Rare items will yield Rare essence, which is used for higher-tier magic.
The big issue with the system is that each recipe is somewhat random. There are a variety of different enchant options for each piece of gear. The effects can be random based on the enchant. For example, “Shock and Awe” can have either electrical buffs or a blindness effect. Each enchant also has ranges of value it can roll. The higher the quality of the gear, up to Legendary, the higher the resulting value.
If you don’t like what you got, you should disenchant and roll again.

How to unlock Torchlight 3 Enchantment
Using the Torchlight 3 Enchantment systems is locked behind story progression. Players have to make it through most of the game before they unlock the feature. You unlock Enchanting and will start to see recipes drop at level 47. The one good thing is that the unlocks are all account-wide, so you don’t need to claim them in each character.
Each of these recipes has their own rarities as well as categories. Each item type will have its own recipes, so you can get plenty of options through grinding out maps. You can even get Pet enchantments in addition to 1H melee weapon, 1H ranged weapon, 2H melee weapon, 2H ranged weapon, armor types and more.
