The Wonderful 101 HD remaster coming to Switch, PS4 and PC

The Wonderful 101

The Wonderful 101 is one of those strange Platinum releases that few gamers seem to remember. The cult classic adventure was built around an innovative concept that could basically be described as Pikmin with superheroes. The release of the game was marked as one of the few bright spots for the failed Wii U console. PlatinumGames is now announcing plans to remaster the zany adventure for the Nintendo Switch at some point.

PlatinumGames director Hideki Kamiya and executive producer Atsushi Inaba teased the news during the Tokyo Game Show in 2019. And now, we’re finally seeing the results of that labor. PlatinumGames has launched a full Kickstarter to help fund production for the new release. As of writing, the project has blown past its goal with more than 13,000 backers, pledging a total of $888,175. The project will be a full HD remaster for the classic on the Nintendo Switch. This means that releases for the PS4 and PC will also be released at some point, thanks to hitting the stretch goals for $500,000.

The Wonderful 101 is a game that unfortunately didn’t reach the audience we hoped, so it’s always been a title that we wanted to revisit at some point in time,” Inaba says. “And we’d spoken with Nintendo about releasing it on the Switch and other platforms, and we wanted to try publishing it ourselves. Nintendo gave us the okay, so a lot of things came together — the timing and the licensing from Nintendo that gave us this opportunity to self-publish. However, as PlatinumGames is a developer and not a publisher, we want help to make this a reality, so we thought the best way to do this would be to create a crowdfunding campaign where the users unite.”

Originally, the company looked to other publishers, relying on Kickstarter as a backup plan in case the offers fell through. Nintendo and various other publishers all declined the project, seemingly no one wanted to touch a remaster of The Wonderful 101. The company also originally planned to work with Chinese firm Tencent to aid in funding their self-publishing efforts.

“This partnership has no effect on the independence of our company, and we will continue operations under our current corporate structure,” said CEO Kenichi Sato.

Pledge to the Kickstarter for The Wonderful 101 remaster on Switch over on the site. PlatinumGames will be aiming for an April 2020 release date if the project doesn’t run into other problems.
