The Outer Worlds to get a patch to fix unreadable text

The Outer Worlds

The Outer Worlds is finally getting full font scaling in its next patch. This new patch won’t be adding any new DLC or story content or anything like that, but it will be bringing a much-requested feature to the Obsidian RPG. As of this new update, players will be able to manually adjust the size of in-game text.

User interface programmer Nate McDorman shared some insights into this new patch on Twitter, revealing its inner workings for all to see. The Outer Worlds is already a massive game with a ton of menus and options to consider for a change like this, which is likely why it has taken so long to see the patch released.

Small text is a common problem within the games industry. Players need scalable text and UI elements for a number of reasons. Some developers have taken to designing their games from the ground up with accessibility in mind, although many companies have a way to go. Accessibility options for color-blind gamers or those with other sight issues are a noticeable and disappointing rarity in modern gaming. Although the situation has definitely gotten better over the years.

Obsidian made sure that visual accessibility is baked into the design of the new RPG. Sure, they made some missteps by not including these options on the launch day, but other factors could have played into the situation that delayed such changes and decisions.

This is actually the second major rework and patch for The Outer Worlds which focused on accessibility. one of the first updates to the game after launch added some options for UI adjustments and a form of scaling, although the intervals in this first patch were set and offered fewer options than the new patch. Later patches also added new fixes for balance problems, duplication exploits and the like.
