PAX East wrapped this week, and during the event, a ton of details that have excited gamers have been revealed. One of the newly revealed aspects was a nice slice of new gameplay for an upcoming RPG gameplay. That RPG is The Outer Worlds being made by Obsidian.
The Outer Worlds is of course a new RPG from Obsidian, but don’t be fooled into expecting a simple adventure. This game is a bit more devious than a typical RPG as well. Your choices, as always in these kinds of games, will have an impact that is either positive or negative depending on what do you, but the consequences are much more deep than it might first appear. The characters you create will have two companions throughout the course of the story, Nyoka and Felix, and their story can change along with your choices as well.
As you go through the story with these two friends, things will get very interesting. The flaws and strengths you develop, both at creation and through gameplay, will start to affect the choices you make later, possibly even changing the course of the story. Although with this relatively short 20-minute gameplay snippet it is somewhat hard to get a good idea of how all these changes can occur.
There are some ideas that were revealed during a Q&A of how the game will force the player to live more in their characters shows though. One example given is a career aptitude test that can be taken at the beginning of the game. The Outer Worlds isn’t going to make you live out that career, but that background may determine some of the actions you take in the future.
We get to see a bit of this gameplay loop, and much more, with the new footage from PAX. For example, we see a lot more than just the morals and choices at play, but there’s a bunch more. There’s elements of the dialogue system, various weapons and loot, and of course the very deep character customization system.
By the way, if you’re looking to grab the game on PC, it will only be available on the Epic Games Store, so keep that in mind. The Outer Worlds will launch for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One later in 2019. Check out the latest gameplay footage of this new title down below.
