Koch Media’s CEO, Klemens Kundratitz, has now confirmed that a major new title is coming. Specifically, it looks like a new Saints Row game is due to be announced next year. Now to be clear, this does not mean it’s due to be released in 2020. Unfortunately, Kundratitz has not revealed any additional details about this new Saints Row game.
Kundratitz spoke to media and released a statement confirming existence of the new game. He also confirmed that the overall tone of the game would fit fairly well with the previous games. The fumbling of Saints Row 4 and its DLC certainly pushed some long-time adherents away, so the aim seems to be to return to the core of the series and try to lure those lost fans back.
As Kundratitz told GamesIndustry:
“Saints Row is very close to our hearts, and we’ll talk about it next year. For the time being, we just wanted to get the word out that it’s coming and it’s going to be great.”
The report reveals the potential for a new game, but that the project is still in the very early stages. As such, there are very few details about what a new game in the franchise would be, or what kind of gameplay we would see. Based on previous entries though, there are some details we can glean. The previous games after the second title amped up the absurdity to an incredible degree. Saints Row 2 is considered by some fans to be the best distillation of the franchise to date. The mix of storytelling involving interesting characters and insane plots was a series high for many.
According to Kundratitz, this new game will still be firmly rooted in that DNA:
“Saints Row is Saints Row. The two games are similar, for sure, but they’re also completely different. With Volition, we have the creators of all the Saints Row games as an internal studio. They’re not going to be distracted by anything else from creating our next game under this important franchise.”
The idea sounds good, and it will be very interesting to see exactly what the development team comes up with. A specific date wasn’t given for Saints Row V’s reveal. One thing we shouldn’t expect, however, is a surprise reveal during The Game Awards, Kundratitz said.
