MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries has been floating around for a while now. Piranha Games has been involved with the BattleTech lore and license for a while now. Most people, fans included, will know this developer from back in 2013 when they launched MechWarrior Online. That game, despite looking great and having an active community of players, was met with some major criticism over aggressive monetization in later years. So when MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries was announced, fans saw it as a chance at redemption.
The new game in the iconic robot battling game franchise based on BattleTech will finally launch next week, after quite a long wait. The development hasn’t been without issue though. Fans of the source material were pretty skeptical of whether the game would come out at all after it was delayed several times. Piranha also announced that the PC game would be an Epic Games Store exclusive. leading to some more backlash.
Check out the launch trailer below.
If you’re in the mood for some more refined mech-on-mech action without the fluff of Harebrained Schemes’ BattleTech, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries could be for you. This new take on the iconic Inner Sphere strips away the more thematic elements, instead choosing to focus on a variety of refinements to the combat and backend components. For one thing, mechs now have ragdoll. Also, environments are much more destructible this time around. This all combines to create a combat system that makes the impacts of mech violence explosively more impactful.
This new trailer isn’t the only thing we’ve seen of the new title. The most recent trailer showcased the scenario editor that will allow players to alter map conditions for each match. Fans also got a look at other areas of the game ahead of launch. There was some footage showing terrain destruction. And before those delays we mentioned earlier were announced, the developers showed off a full 10 minute snippet of more gameplay. The developer also recently showcased some of the fast and brutal combat.
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries will release on December 10th.
