The Last of Us Part II gameplay trailer shows off new weapons and upgrade systems

Last of Us Part II

Naughty Dog has just dropped a stunning bit of gameplay for The Last of Us Part II this week. A new The Last of Us Part II gameplay video shows us something we haven’t seen before. Sure, we’ve seen plenty of combat, and Ellie is quite good with a bow in this game, but a related element we haven’t seen before is the weapons and crafting system.

The Last of Us Part II will follow in the footsteps of the original game by keeping some elements of the ramshackle crafting system from the first game. Although Naughty Dog has clearly made some changes. The video shows how the developer has changed that system for the better. Ellie has grown up, and the crafting and weapon systems in the PS4 game have grown up too.

The first game in the series had a pretty basic but very intuitive system. By carefully crafting and pacing enemy encounters and their difficulty, Naughty Dog made it so that the player was forced to be more tactical, often conserving ammo and other resources. After all, you were always left wondering what else could come running around the next corner in the middle of a firefight. That tension is still there in the sequel, but it appears that the system for managing resources and upgrading weapons has been made a bit easier to deal with.

There are not only more weapons in the game this time around, but their stats have been tweaked a bit. Players can now adjust the accuracy, range, damage and ammo capacity of all guns, although it’s still unclear how we go about that. If the sequel is anything like the first game, expect to find the scrap scattered around levels, then making choices about what and when to upgrade based on your chosen playstyle.

The Last of Us Part II is due out for PS4 on May 29th. There have been rumors of a PC port flying around, but nothing official has been confirmed on that front. Sadly there won’t be a multiplayer mode this time around, unlike the first game.

Those who want to see the new crafting system in action in The Last of Us Part II can check it out below.

If you’re interested in learning more about the game, there’s a bit more meat on these bones. The game was recently rated by the ESRB, suggesting much more extreme content this time around. You could also listen in on a great interview with Ellie’s voice actor, Ashley Johnson, as she talks about all things gaming and geek in Between the Sheets.
