The first trailer for the Detective Pikachu movie is out, and the memes are spicy

Detective Pikachu Movie Trailer Released

The internet is currently ablaze with hype over the Detective Pikachu movie, which recently released a new trailer. Ryan Reynolds heads the cast as Pikachu himself, and he’s approaching promoting it with his characteristic charm and wit. Detective Pikachu seeks to take the typical anime trappings of Pokemon and slam them into a more modern setting, with some pretty hilarious results.

The live-action film takes a bit of weird twist in a tonal sense judging from the trailer. There’s the typical rediscovering your dreams shtick, interlaced with action scenes and a darker comedic setting. It seems like WB is going for a mix of kid-friendly imagery and slightly more adult writing in an attempt to bridge generational gaps in their target audience for the film. We’ll just have to wait and see how all of that pans out when the film debuts.

Here’s an official overview of the film plot:

The story begins when ace private eye Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.

The film is slated to release on May 10, 2019, and you can also watch the trailer below:
